DON'T BREATHE (2016) Movie Review

John 7:24 - "Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.”

Don't Breathe is the very definition of a robbery gone wrong. Three reckless thieves break into the home of a blind veteran with intent of finding a fortune, money that would allow them to break free from their miserable existence. What they find in this house is far more sinister than they could anticipate.

A simple robbery turns into a night of terror as the three young thieves learn the hard way that within the supposed helpless man lies deadly skill and a sinister heart. His home becomes a trap from which they escape in order to survive. The deeper they venture into the house, the more they discover about his sinister intentions.

Not everything is as it appears. That is the driving message of Don't Breathe. We must never judge someone at their surface. Not only do the thieves make the mistake of underestimating their target, but the blind man also underestimates Rocky, Alex and Money. To him Alex and Money are dumb kids worthy killing in cold blood. The girl Rocky is a mere breeder.

Beneath the surface, Rocky and Alex are so much more. They are both victims of circumstance. Rocky is the rock in her family. She pays their way, which is why she must work. She is also a loyal, loving sister. She is the only positive role model in her sister's life. All she wants is a chance to save her sister and herself from their miserable lives.

Alex is a kind and selfless young man. He is the voice of reason in the group. He cares deeply for Rocky. He protects her. He fights for her. He never leaves her behind. Could he be willing to die for her?

Psalm 34:6 - "In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles."

Then comes the moment when all seems lost and she may never see her sister again. In her desperation she cries out to God. However, the blind man is a godless man. He justifies his actions due to his unbelief. He denies the existence of God due to the loss of his daughter.

In what way does this justify his actions? Short answer: IT DOESN'T.

What he wants is an excuse to satisfy his own selfish desires.

God does exist. God does want her out of danger. God wants her reunited with her sister. God gives Rocky a second chance.

John 10:10 - "The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life."

Nobody's actions in this film are godly. Not the thieves despite their circumstances. Not the blind man despite his grief. Thus, the robbery ends in disaster. Severe damage is done. Lives are lost. Justice is prevented.

What would Rocky do with her second chance? Let us hope she is redeemed.
