HACKSAW RIDGE (2016) Movie Review

In Matthew 5:9, Christ teaches, "God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God."

Hacksaw Ridge is a true story about Private Desmond T. Doss, an army medic at the Battle of Okinawa. His heroic efforts won him the medal of honor after he saved 75 wounded soldiers from the terrifying battlefield positioned over a steep and deadly cliff. His survival through the battle is nothing short of a miracle, let alone without a single weapon.

Doss is a man of firm conviction. He is a man of peace. He refuses to touch a weapon. He refuses to use violence against another human being. He pursues one purpose: to heal. He is an army medic, not a killer. Nothing stops him including severe bullying, the threat of a court martial, and a battlefield full of enemy soldiers programed to kill him.

In John 16:33, Christ teaches, "I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

The story of Desmond Doss is a one of a kind. His steadfast, unrelenting peace and selflessness causes an instant influence upon the soldiers around him, ally and enemy alike. This influence gives his fellow soldiers the courage and drive necessary to win victory over Hacksaw Ridge.

Hacksaw Ridge portrays no mere private. It portrays a true hero. It teaches a lesson about the most effective influence a person can have on others. Peace, love, patience, and sacrifice. He is the embodiment of Christ's teachings. May Desmond Doss' example live in our hearts forever.

In Matthew 5:39, Christ teaches, "But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also."
