MR. RIGHT (2016) Movie Review

1 Peter 2:12 says, "Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world." (New Living Translation)

"Nobody's normal. Nobody's healthy." (Mr. Right)

“Who… wants to be normal anyway?” (Mr. Right)

What even is normal? Who dictates the terms? Who has the right to judge?

These are questions the movie's star couple, Mr. Right and Martha, call into question. This is the world in which we live. Judgement and assumptions are everywhere. Francis and Martha take the brunt of this judgement throughout their story. They are labeled as weird , crazy , or out of control, because people refuse see beneath their surfaces.

Mr. Right is an assassin , a very skilled and fierce assassin. That is his reputation. Of course, he has more qualities than that. Like everyone else, he is a child of God. He is a victim of violence. He is a prisoner to his trade. He is also charismatic, friendly, entertaining, honest, and loyal. He yearns for love. He yearns for freedom. He years for acceptance.

Meanwhile, Martha is a very odd bird. She drinks, she obsesses, she causes trouble, and her friends consider her an inconvenience. People call her crazy. Fortunately, Mr. Right sees beyond all of this. He sees a beautiful lady who is intelligent, colorful, and passionate. He sees his soul-mate. He sees his future.

In a world filled with judgement, they understand each other.

Philippians 4:5 says, "Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon." (NLT)

However, his attempt at redemption doesn't come easy. People see him as an assassin. They use him. They stalk him. They threaten him. They beat him. They attempt to kill him. They either want to use him, or they want to kill him. Except Martha. How blessed is he who finds love and acceptance?

Proverbs 22:1 says, "Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold." (NLT)

How long will Mr. Right struggle to undo his reputation as a killer?. His journey of redemption will be long and hard. However, redemption never comes too late in life, and it is possible for all. Through Christ, we find love and understanding. Through Christ, we are all accepted. Through Christ, all are redeemed.

In John 3:16, Christ explains, “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." (NLT)
