THE LEAST AMONG YOU (2010) Movie Review

Cara Buckley • Aug 24, 2010

The film, The Least Among You , will debuts on August 24 on DVD, Digital Download, and On Demand from Lionsgate. Director and writer Mark Young found inspiration from a true story about Reverend Charles Marks who found his calling in the middle of a race war. It is the story of a black man’s struggle with racism at an all-white seminary and his struggle with his personal faith.

Award winner Cedric Sanders plays Richard Kelly, a young black man who finds his calling to be a pastor despite his personal plans. Set during 1965 Watts Riots, Kelly is falsely arrested and required to serve out his sentence in an all-white seminary. His plan was to peacefully serve his sentence in seminary and go back to his old job.

However, his struggle with racist colleagues pushes him to take action to petition integration and eradicate racism. The story is powerful and intense. It leaves you with a haunting sense of the unjust racism that blacks endured during the 60s even by aspiring church leaders.

Feeling rejected and alone, he confides in Samuel Benton., (Academy Award winner the Louis Gossett, Jr.) gardener/janitor and the only other black figure at the seminary. He serves as Kelly’s safe haven and spiritual mentor. He gives Kelly the strength and motivation to defend himself, address his faith, and keep his nose clean. He becomes the father figure that Kelly never had.

The Special Features of the DVD include Deleted Scenes,” “Behind the Scenes Featurette,” and an interview with Rev. Dr. Charles Marks. Look for copies of the DVD that will be available on August 24, and feel free to check out the trailer below.
