THOR (2011) Movie Review

Thor contains a unique story mix of Superman and Sword in the Stone using a Norse mythological background. In the film Thor was not the Norse god of thunder as he was believed to be. Instead, he is an immortal being from another realm who is banished to Earth after provoking war. He is stripped of his title, powers, and hammer; and until he proves himself worthy, he won’t be able to lift his hammer again. In fact, no one who finds the hammer is able to lift it, because none of them are worthy.

What makes him worthy? Despite his many efforts to fight his way back to his hammer, he doesn’t become worthy until he sacrifices his life in order to save lives and prevent war.

He finally comes to understand the importance of peace and the sanctity of life. So, he offers his own life knowing his death would satisfy his brother’s blood lust causing him to cease his attacks just as Christ sacrificed himself to bring salvation to the world. It wasn’t until Thor’s sacrifice was he worthy to bear the hammer again, and Thor was resurrected with his powers in tact. Thor used his powers to save the world in stead of creating war, which is what Christ did for us.

While the story covers Thor’s journey to finding peace, along the way he encounter’s Jane Foster, a scientist working to discover the link between worlds. He becomes the key to her answer. In doing so, she learns to exceed the limits of science and accept the truth behind mythology. She also learns to accept that science and mythology can go hand in hand, which is what leads her to the truth. Science led her to Thor, but only Thor could provide her with answers.

It is a plight we all face. We must look beyond our own understanding to find the answer we need.

I was thoroughly impressed with Thor. It had a perfect mix of drama, humor, romance, and tragedy. Plus, it portrayed the message of open-mindedness and peace in a concise manner. It is a brilliant addition to the Marvel series. I eagerly await the next.
