UNCONDITIONAL (2012) Movie Review

John 13:34-35: “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

Sam is a woman who knows great loss and tragedy after her husband is murdered in a dark alley on the wrong side of town. She slips into a dark obsession with the killer until she eventually loses her faith and the will to live. On the night of her attempted suicide, she witnesses a hit and run where a young is severely injured. She calls 911, and the girl is rushed to the hospital.

It’s a simple action. It doesn’t take much effort and something she’d done before in her childhood. What Sam doesn’t realize until much later is the impact of her actions. She saves two lives, after which both people feel an undeniable connection to her. Thus, she is granted the opportunity to witness to them.

She develops a relationship with the children in the Commons, and she sees how little they have and how much she can offer to them. During her unintentional witness to those children, God gives her the ability to move on and rediscovery her faith in Him. The Lord works in mysterious ways. He can use us for his purpose even when we struggle with doubt.

What impresses me about this film is how it does not hold back picturing tragedy and hardship. It shows how brutal the real world can be. Such a film can relate people who know hardship (including myself). I expect people find it as inspirational as I have when it premieres in theatres on September, 21st.
