HOW ONE MAN FINDS INSPIRATION IN 'A SIMPLE FAVOR'.

Cara Buckley • Sep 14, 2018

An outcast homemaker finds her calling through mystery.

Acts 20:35 - "And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (NLT)

What happened to Emily Nelson?

A Simple Favor is the most intriguing film of the year. The story follows Stephanie Smothers as she investigates the disappearance of Emily Nelson following a mysterious phone call. Emily asks for yet another favor of Stephanie: to pick up her son from school after an unexpected event keeps Emily from returning home from work. She never comes home.

This "simple favor" is anything but simple. In fact, it escalates into the most complicated journey of Stephanie's life. Stephanie learns that there is nothing simple about Emily's past, family, and personality. Emily is toxic. She is destructive to every person whose life she touches. She stifles their creativity. She ruins their ability to be productive. She seduces them into making self destructive decisions. Emily is a snake.

However, Emily makes a mistake by befriending the sweet, unassuming Stephanie. They connect through their children who share a kindergarten class. Emily gets more than she bargains for when she attempts to use Stephanie as a free nanny, always taking and never giving back. Finally, the day comes when she asks for one favor too many, and Stephanie begins to investigate Emily's complicated, terrible past.

Proverbs 12:26 - "The godly give good advice to their friends; the wicked lead them astray." (NLT)

Stephanie and Emily are polar opposites in many ways. While Emily drains away the energy of others, Stephanie inspire and renews others. Stephanie is selfless and giving while Emily only ever takes and destroys, including her husband's writing career and her ex's artistic career.

Not only does Stephanie restores their inspiration, she also protects her own ability to be inspired and productive. She is an involved and attentive caretaker to all children under her wing. Plus, she dedicates much of her time managing a vlog dedicated to other moms. She teaches cooking and crafting. She finds inspiration everywhere she goes and uses that energy towards positive things. She uses that same energy towards investigating. Thus, a new hobby is born. Her investigations put her vlog on the map. This platform allows her to inspire millions of people.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 - "So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing." (NLT)

How does your behavior affect others? Which kind of person do you aspire to be? One who takes or one who gives? One who is counterproductive or one who inspires? A cheater or a truth seeker? Allow this film to be a lesson.
