AVATAR (2009) Movie Review

Cara Buckley • Dec 18, 2009

Can there be any connection to Jesus Christ in Avatar ? Most might think not, because James Cameron’s movie is based on the Hindu religion.

For example, The name Avatar refers to the mortal forms that the god Vishnu (the Hindu “God the Son”) takes on Earth. Jake Sulley, the hero in the film, also takes a form called an Avatar on Pandora. In an interview with Cameron he said the reason Na’Vi, the natives of Pandora, are blue is because the Hindu gods are blue.

However, even in Avatar the truth of Jesus Christ can be seen.

Similar to the story in Avatar, the Bible speaks about the God who “so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son” (John 3:16) to earth to save its people from certain death.

The Bible teaches that it was God himself who “became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14). In a manner of speaking, Jesus Christ is literally the Avatar of God.

As in the movie where the Avatar was sent to Pandora to save it. So in the Bible we learn that Jesus Christ came “to save the world” (John 3:17).

In the movie we learn that the Na’Vi people were in danger of certain death at the hands of destructive forces! The Avatar must save them. This is exactly the role of Christ as presented in scripture. Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).

The truth not presented in the film is how Jesus Christ can set you free of sin and death, and give you new life. But the Bible does. Here is what it says:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

And it is that simple! New life can be yours. Here’s how:

1. Acknowledge that you are in danger of death and destruction.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)
“…the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23)

2. Know that Jesus Christ came to save you.

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10).

3. Believe and trust in Jesus as your Savior.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16)

4. Welcome Jesus into your life as the Leader of your life.

“… to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

To welcome Jesus into your life, simply say a prayer like this: Dear Jesus, thank You for loving me enough to die on a cross for my sins. I am sorry, please forgive me. Come into my life as savior and leader. Thank you for the free gift of eternal life with You in heaven. I promise to follow You and tell others of You. Amen.
