THE HORRIFYING TRUTH OF THE HILARIOUS "FREE GUY"

BENEATH THE KNEE-SLAPPING COMEDY LIES DISTURBING HERESY.

Ryan Reynolds is as brilliant as always in "Free Guy". He plays Guy, a generic bank teller whose life is an unending loop of mundanity. What he doesn't know is that he is an NPC (non-player character) in the video game of "Free City". NPCs can range from population filler to important contributors in missions/quests. Which is Guy?

Is his purpose mundane or important? That all depends on which "God" he chooses to follow.

In this case, the known god of Free City keeps a tight, controlling grip on his little city. He goes by the name of Antwan, and he is the most arrogant business owner to ever hit the silver screen. There is no doubt that this man loves nothing else than money, violence, and theft. These three things are the focus points of his game. The players of Free City thrive on these terrible things. Consequence free. Just like Antwan.

Meanwhile, the NPC citizens of Free City live in blissful ignorance. They accept their violent guest because it is what they are programmed to do. They don't know any other reality. They become slaves in their own world with no experience in peace, joy, or love. What a horrific way to live. Antwan is a false god who preaches a false way of life.

Who is the real god of Free City? They are the two visionary programmers, Keys and Millie, who believed their work should inspire goodness. Their characters become real life, a form of Artificial Intelligence. Free City is not Antwan's original work. The life inside its citizens is inspired by Keys and Millie. They unknowingly discover a technological miracle, but Antwan stole their technology and corrupted their world.

Let's review. Antwan takes AI code (aka real life) and traps them in a world where he is written as "God". He then unleashes an army of hostile players upon their city where they are free to steal, beat, and kill without consequence. All because that is the way of life with which he is familiar. He steals and destroys throughout his life without consequences. In fact, he profits from his theft.

Until Millie, the game's real creator, appears and inspires the love that awakens Free City's hero. Guy's love breaks him free from his endless daily routine. He focuses his time and energy on helping his fellow NPCs. Instilled with an endless supply of positivity and encouragement, he becomes the city's ideal savior. Every NPC he touches is able to break free from their programming, and they learn to live independently. His goodness spreads goodness. His creative thinking inspires creative thinking. People from both worlds (players and NPCs alike) rally around his message of peace.

However, the attention growing on Guy takes away from the false god. Ever the narcissist , Antwan unravels at the loss of control over his virtual world. It is then he reveals the depths of his depravity where he crosses the line as a creator. He blocks all players from the game and attempts to destroy the entire city. Of course, any rational businessman would know that burning his paying customers that bad would devastate his bottom line.

Since he has no real talent, he would have nothing to offer as a creator without a team to rob. His empire falls the moment he meets ax to server. Don't even get me started on why there are no backups to those servers. Whatever the reason, Antwan destroys his real-life along with his virtual world. His own arrogance becomes his downfall.

Meanwhile, the savior of Free City finds a new world for his people to thrive. In a new game call New Life, the NPCs find the freedom to truly live like the real people they are. Most importantly, they are free from a false god that would enslave and destroy them. Their true gods are much like our true God: unconditionally loving.
