TRUTH BRINGS FREEDOM, EVEN TO THE "SIGHTLESS".

Cara Buckley • Feb 10, 2021

Proverbs 13:5 - "The righteous hates falsehood, but the wicked brings shame and disgrace." (ESV)

Nothing is as it seems in Netflixsensation, "Sightless". From the troubling parallels it takes from horrors and thrillers before it to the questionable quality of the writing, the story takes its audience on a confusing rollercoaster until its (not so) twist ending, which will make you want to watch it all over again.

At first glance, this thrillerappears to copy a certain 2008 horror film starring Jessica Alba. In many ways, "Sightless" is a poor man's "The Eye". A blind violinist struggles to adjust to her new life after a life-altering change. Until she overcomes the horror of her condition and becomes a musical sensation once again. It's almost insulting.

Why the writers of "Sightless" chose such a glaring parallel is unclear, but the viewers of Netflix are eating it up. "Sightless" is a Netflix Top 10 this week. Perhaps, it has something to do this the differences between the two films that have viewers so enthralled. There is something remarkable relatable about the psychological effects of feeling trapped, thanks to the Quarantine mandates of our time.

Meanwhile, the exposition-fueled dialogue leaves something to be desired. Everyone around this vulnerable, young woman seems to know everything about her fading stardom. They pressure her to continue her music. They lead her through a fruitless investigation. They make empty promises and give the same troubling advice: sit tight and do as you're told. Lazy writing or plot point?

SPOILERS AHEAD.

Romans 16:17-18 - "Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them. 18 Such people are not serving Christ our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests. By smooth talk and glowing words they deceive innocent people." (NLT)

Strip away the supernatural terror provided in "The Eye", Ellen finds herself in the storyline of " 1BR" where there is no magic or spirits. Instead, she comes face-to-face with the most troubling villain of all: Clayton. A real human being with a criminal obsession. Human monsters are scarier than ghosts, because they are real. The world is littered with human monsters.

They're abusive, violent, selfish, and difficult to identify. Often, we don't know what they are until it is too late. Without her eyesight, it is almost impossible for Emma to identify the monster in front of her. She cannot even see her surroundings. Her sightlessness makes her utterly vulnerable. At least, he thinks it does, which is why Clayton puts such little effort into his ruse. Ripe with gaslighting, alienation, love bombing, emotional blackmail, and violence.

There is, however, one thing he doesn't count on. She has experience with an abusive man. She knows the playbook very well, and she can see through the inconsistencies of his lies. Her eyesight may be gone, but her mind is as sharp as ever. As is her desire for freedom and independence. Despite her disability. Despite her abusers. Thus, she leaps from her balcony. It looks like suicide, but it is a metaphorical leap of faith that is driven by her desire to enter a world that makes sense. Even for a brief moment.

1 Peter 2:16 - "For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil." (NLT)

This is where she finds the ultimate truth about her reality. What does she find? How does she use her knowledge to be free? What will she do with her freedom?

Log in to Netflix and find out.
