THE FIFTH WAVE (2016) Movie Review

Based on The Fifth Wave book series, The Fifth Wave is an incredible film that explores a terrifying alien invasion. It follows many iconic alien invasion films to the silver screen, so the pressure is on. What sets the Fifth Wave apart from the rest?

Firstly, the beings remain a complete mystery to their human competitors. The only thing that isn’t a puzzle is their intentions. They invade to steal the land. Obvious. Straight forward. Cliche, even. However, the story has an undeniable intrigue that begs many questions.

What do they look like?

Where do they come from?

What happened to their home planet that forced them to look for a new home?

How long have they know about Earth?

How long have they been planning their invasion?

Then, there is the most terrifying question of all.

Will they succeed?

Cassie Sullivan, the determined heroine and a most loyal sister, certainly makes that difficult. Having survived a series of horrible events, she is separated from her little brother. Her first priority then becomes her attempt to reunite with him. She stops at nothing to locate him.

With all of the things the visitors planned for, Cassie proves something they not only fail to consider, but also fail to understand.

She exhibits loyalty, kindness, and love. These traits make up her very humanity; hers are so strong that they manage to inspire a visitor. Her example leads him to turn over a new leaf, join her campaign to save the human race, and sacrifice himself to save her.

Titus 2:7 says ” And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching.” (NLT)

A release date for the possible sequel remains unclear. Cassie, her brother, and a few survivors pull together to end the invasion and save what remains of the human race. I am eager to see their next step.

The Fifth Wave is both inspiring and thrilling.
