THE MIDNIGHT MAN (2017) Movie Review

Don't let the darkness end your life.

John 11:10 - "But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.” (NLT)

The Midnight Man is the story of a dark and fatal game. This game promises victory as long as the players follow the rules, which seem easy to follow. Little do the players know how ruthless and dangerous the demon is. Most players don't believe in the reality of the demon known as the Midnight Man until the game is well in progress.

With a drop of blood and a single candle, they invite the demon into a house shrouded in complete darkness at the stroke of midnight. All they must do is avoid him for three and a half hours while keeping their candles lit. If the flame blows out, then he attacks unless they surround themselves in a ring of salt. Otherwise, they endure physical and psychological torture

The candles and salt are their only protection during the game. Both are feeble and easily manipulated. The Midnight Man takes advantage of these weaknesses. Salt can be brushed or washed away. Clocks can be rewound. The rules that are meant to protect the players are easily bent.

The Midnight Man represents the devil in this way. He is the father of lies. His purpose is to rob people of their souls. He keeps people in darkness away from the light of the world, from Christ, and from salvation. He tempts people, which drives them to invite him in to their lives. He exposes their sins, tortures them with guilt, and steals their souls.

1 John 1:7 - "But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin." (NLT)

This film is a cautionary tale against dwelling in darkness. The players fail to realize their saving grace, which leads to their downfall. Their biggest mistake was their decision to play the game. Instead, they give into temptation and turn off the lights. The light is their only protection from the demon, not clocks, salt, or rules. Not even the support of loved ones give the players a fighting chance.

Light brings salvation. The light of God protects our souls. Don't give into temptation and sin. Don't turn off the lights. Don't let the devil take you. Instead, allow Christ to offer you saving grace.
