One woman who refuses to become a victim.

Proverbs 31:9 - "Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice." (NLT)

The medical and psychological systems in this country are broken. Proper care is determined by the quality of one's insurance, not by one's particular needs. Treatment relies on pharmaceutical companies. Doctors push far more drugs than necessary causing nonfunctional states of mind and chemical dependency.

One such victim of the system is Sawyer Valentini in the psychological thriller, Unsane .

This desperate woman would not only become a victim of the system, she is also a victim of an obsessive stalker and of the legal system. What she does have is the right kind of insurance, she walks into Highland Creek Behavioral Center in search of support for her anxiety over her captive life because of her stalker. Instead, she finds a violation of civil liberties and a daily cup of medication she doesn't need.

Leviticus 19:15 - "Do not twist justice in legal matters by favoring the poor or being partial to the rich and powerful. Always judge people fairly." (NLT)

The law wouldn't help her stalking case, so she is forced to move, nor would it help her break free from her captivity in a mental institution. The doctors and nurses refuse to listen to her pleas for help. They are more concerned about collecting the insurance money. Even her mother's lawyer refuses to help.

There is only one person willing to help her, fellow inmate Nate Hoffman. He is empathetic, kind, and honest. He becomes the only person she trusts, her only real friend. She confides in him about her stalker, and he gives her the emotional support she craves. However, there is only so much he can do in his own limited civil liberties.

Sawyer is not one to lie down and suffer injustice. She is a fighter. Since nobody fights for her, she fights for herself against the system and her stalker. In the end, she learns that she is the only person on whom to rely to fix her situation. She must confront her stalker before he permanently strips her of her freedom, either by kidnapping her or killing her. Because every official in her life fails to protect her, she falls victim to injury and nearly dies. She resorts to self-defense.

Matthew 7:12 - “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets." (NLT)

The Bible is littered with verses commanding justice for the innocent. However, the world is littered with corruption, greed, and sloth. Time and again, people have only themselves on whom to rely. While we have no control over officials, we can at least be the emotional support or empathetic ear for others. Even a small amount of support could make a world of difference. It could mean the difference between life and death. We can be for others what Nate is for Sawyer.
